~~THE HISTORY OF BLACKJACK~~
Blackjack was first introduced in the United States in the 1700's from France. It was called '21'. Back in those days, if a player had a Jack of Spades and an Ace of Spades as the first 2 cards received, then the player was automatically paid out an extra bonus amount. This hand was called a "blackjack" and so hence the name.
~~HOW IT'S PLAYED~~
Dealer starts the game by dealing two cards, face up, to each of the players. The dealer then gives themselves two cards, one facing down and one facing up. The card facing down (hole card) isn't played until all players play their hand. Only then does the dealer expose the 'hole' card and play the dealer hand. When you have your cards in front of you, you can choose to either 'stand' (take no more cards) or 'hit' (get another card to play). Until you reach 21. (All cards are of face value except: King, Queen and Jack=10, Ace=1 or 11). If you go over 21, you automatically 'bust' or lose. A hand that contains an Ace is called a "soft" if the Ace can be counted as either 1 or 11 without going over 21. For example (Ace, 6) is a soft 17. It derives from the fact that the player can always draw another card to a soft total with no danger of busting. The hand (Ace, 6, 10) on the other hand is a "hard" 17, since now the Ace must be counted as only 1, again because counting it as 11 would make the hand go over 21.
When the dealer plays his/her hand, they must draw to a soft 17 and stand when a hard 17 or more is reached. At the end of the game, if your count is the same as the dealer's, it is a 'push' (no one wins). If the player's count is greater than the dealer's or if the dealer's busted over 21, the player wins.
